Trulicity® (dulaglutide): How to remove the Pen Base Cap

Make sure the pen is locked. Pull off and discard the grey base cap. Use the pen immediately after the base cap is removed. Do not put the base cap back on, this could damage the needle.

How to remove the base cap

  1. Make sure the pen is locked.

  2. Pull the base cap straight off.

  3. Discard the grey base cap.

Do not put the base cap back on – this could damage the needle. Do not touch the needle.1

Tips to remove the base cap

DO NOT REMOVE the base cap if the pen was activated.2

  • If the Pen is activated with the base cap on, the needle does not complete its injection. Removing the base cap will allow the needle to complete its injection, release the dose and retract.

  • This will happen too quickly for the patient to attempt to remove the Base Cap and place the Pen against the injection site to deliver the dose. The dose will already have been released.

  • Store your pen safely to avoid an accidental needle stick injury.1

Just pull the grey base cap down. Do not twist to remove it.2

Use one hand to hold the device and the other hand to pull the base cap straight down to remove it.2

Background information on base cap

The base cap protects the patient from the needle. It also keeps the needle sterile.2

The patient should use the pen immediately after the base cap is removed.2

What if the pen was unlocked and the green injection button was pressed, before pulling off the base cap?

If the pen was unlocked and the green injection button pressed before pulling off the base cap,

  • Do not remove the base cap and

  • do not use the pen.

  • Dispose of the pen as per local procedure. Inject the dose using another pen.1
