Taltz® (ixekizumab): How to remove the pen base cap?

The user should keep the pen in the lock position with the base cap on until ready to inject. After the base cap was twisted off, it should be thrown away and not put back on. The pen should be used immediately after the removal of the base cap.

Additional information on the base cap

The base cap is designed for an easy twist off. It should be twisted off in the direction of the arrows.1

After the base cap was removed, it should not be put back on. Doing so could damage the needle or cause accidental injury.2

Once the base cap is removed, the user should not touch the needle.2

Storage without the base cap attached

The pre-filled pen must be used immediately after the base cap is removed.

  • If the base cap is left off the pen for a long period, the solution can dry in the needle pathway. This can cause the needle to clog. If the needle is clogged the pen will not deliver the dose.

  • The base cap keeps the needle sterile and protects the patient from an accidental needle stick. The pen should not be stored without the base cap on it because dirt or bacteria can get into the needle.

  • If the base cap was removed and it is not time for the injection, the pen should be thrown away.1

Pen was accidentally activated with the base cap attached

  • The pen should not be used if it was activated with the base cap attached. The pen is activated if it is unlocked and the green injection button is pressed.

  • If the pen was activated with the base cap attached, the base cap should not be removed. The pen should be disposed of as per local procedure. The user should inject the dose using another pen.1
